The finale was bad. BAD. If you haven't watched this show yet, don't start! They never wrapped up their plot threads!!!

Also, I really don't want to go back to using Java.

Stuff [Dec. 9th, 2008|12:23 pm]
It's been a while since I've updated, but here I am 'stuck' at home during a snow day! I couldn't be happier about my relaxing day in. Here's some stuff going on.

- I'm spending a lot of time coding at home on my laptop.
- Val is slowly is slowly moving in, box by box.
- We're definitely eloping to avoid any family wedding drama.
- Each day that passes I'm getting more into coffee.

There's drama going on, but I can't really write about it. Employers sifting through the interwebs and all :-(

Anyone still out reading this?

Sound from the Ground [Sep. 25th, 2008|06:55 pm]
Yesterday we had a new Swedish foam tempurpedic mattress delivered. So far, I'm really liking it. The last one was only 3 years old, but it was really starting to sink in the middle from my huge ass. This one has a 20 year ass-smashing warranty.

Today I actually had an 8 hour usability meeting. We didn't even break for lunch!

Yeah. [Sep. 24th, 2008|08:41 pm]
There are so many people I run into who tell me how they 'have it all figured out' and how their ideologies can make my life easier to deal with. I've been getting a lot of this lately with weddings, career planning and even my snacking habits. These people create a sharp contrast with those who aren't always trying to push 'solutions' on everyone else... and I've found that those who don't claim to have the silver bullet solutions often give the best advice!

One of Us... [Sep. 1st, 2008|10:20 pm]
After a few days with the Blackjack, I broke down and exchanged it for an iPhone. Best decision ever. I then realized that I've made 4 major purchases from Apple in less than a year, and I've been very happy with all of them.

Please, Steve Jobs, never retire.

Milk & Cookies [Aug. 27th, 2008|10:06 pm]
Do I ever need a day off.

Last weekend I was in upstate New York seeing my inlaws-to-be and planning the wedding. Her family is very nice, and we got a lot done. It was definitely no vacation for me! It's extremely similar to Wisconsin up there. Even the accents are the same.

My new phone, a Blackjack 2 from Samsung, has Windows Mobile 6.1. It's horrible. Worse than I thought it could be. Terrible UI design, and very clunky looking. Luckily I'm not needing to use any of the Windows 'features' as I bought the phone only for the QWERTY layout. Maybe an iPhone next time... I'm not up for spending $500 a year on a data plan just yet. If only we could get Apple phones without a mandatory plan!

Meeting Fail [Aug. 19th, 2008|10:45 pm]
Today I was in meetings from 8 AM straight to 3:30. That sometimes sucks because it's boring, but this time it sucked because I had to repeatedly scream at other people to avoid having expectations go completely haywire. It's fun in a way, but very tiring.

Thursday I leave for NY to look at wedding venues.

Engagement ring shopping is much more involved than I ever thought it could be. We both have very similar taste in what makes a ring beautiful, which is nice.

For the first time in a long time I was able to mix records on 2 Technics 1200s! I'd forgotten how much fun mixing house music is.

Oh, and I saw the new batman movie. It really is THAT good!

  • Just about everyone I know has thought the Magic Bullet is an adult toy. It's made some... interesting social situations.
  • Rhythm & Booms went very well. Baseball game beforehand, got home from the park in 5 minutes!
  • Talked to friends from Costa Rica about our trip to Costa Rica! We're going to swim with dolphins! My own mother tried to warn me about getting raped by horny male dolphins. wtf.
  • I'm really getting into the HBO series 'The Wire'.
  • My new house records are a week late. I hate it when music deliveries are late!!
  • I'm addicted to squash curry and dark sweet cherries.

Smoothies [Jun. 23rd, 2008|12:47 pm]
Yesterday I bought one of those Magic Bullets seen on infomercials. I made 3 fruit smoothies last night that were really, really really good. Nonfat, no added sugar. This is going to become an obsession. It's almost too easy. AND I haven't even tried adding any alcohol yet... or iced coffees. It does kinda bother me that the name sounds like an adult toy.

Tonight I'm making Chicken simmered in korma sauce.

Whatnots and Whathaveyous [May. 28th, 2008|01:02 pm]
  • Major sunburn from Saturday. It's now itching like mad. Having a hard time not scratching my nipples in public.
  • Made a video DVD on my Mac! It was easy, and it turned out nearly perfect. Need a subject for the next one...
  • NEW DANISH EYEGLASSES ARE READY! Just in time. Must get them after work.
  • Dinner Party tonight, accenting my whiteness.
  • People in this city don't know what roundabouts are.
  • Grilled ostrich for the first time. It's excellent when shmeared with BBQ sauce.
  • I wish there was a class I could take to learn GarageBand.
  • The new Indiana Jones was lame, but worth watching once.
  • Thanks Gods for music.

Mad Science [May. 20th, 2008|11:31 pm]
- I drove next to a Smart Car on the way to work today. Things are changing, kinda cool.

- My gas tank was $50 today. Not cool.

- I really don't want to look like an obvious gringo in Costa Rica, but there is not a thing I can do about this.

- Finished up season 3 of Battlestar Galactica. It was DAMN good. Also, they really know how to dress the women on that show. Pencil skirts FTW.

- I have a hard time sleeping if I eat gummy bears at any time during the day. I don't get it.

We bought tickets for Costa Rica this weekend! I really need this vacation. I'm going to have to start working on my tan so I don't burn to a crisp in the first few days.

Allergies have been terrible this weekend. I had to lock myself inside and turn up my filtration system. It worked, and I can breathe now, but I want to get outside soon. I barely survived the party we threw on Friday night, even though we had a great time. The neighbors must hate us!

Today I was voted the "whitest" person in my department at work! These - http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com/full-list-of-stuff-white-people-like/ - were the main criteria, though it's still not very accurate. I can't argue with their decision, however.

I highlighted the ones that are on point.

Yeah, so, it's been a while. I've been busy. Work is good & stressful, but I've been going out frequently to offset it! Tonight the client's CIO bought me dinner :-) We're planning more for Costa Rica, I helped a 'less fortunate' neighborhood with their yard work, and reconnected with a few old friends.

And I'm getting very good at making Ghirardelli mochas!

i can has iPhone [Apr. 29th, 2008|10:33 pm]
I've not been governmentally stimulated yet, however...

AT&T is preparing to subsidize $200 of the cost of a new iPhone, bringing the price down to $199 for customers who sign two-year contracts, the source says. Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499.

Then I'd even have some money left over from my recent OT adventures.

Google AND Microsoft are opening engineering offices right near my house. Everyone is talking about economic downturns and recessions, but I'm sure not seeing it in my field. Yet.

Nissan & Chevy [Apr. 28th, 2008|12:26 pm]
We only spent 10 minutes at the Nissan dealer, because we didn't fit in anything they had. It was a little funny to see the salesmen freak out about it. One of them basically said to us "you're abnormal and no car will ever fit you." Heh.

Then to Chevy, which was depressing. It was a complete ghost town. Even my dad, who has been a Chevy driver for 30+ years, was disappointed. We fit in an Equinox, but it falls well below the rest of the class in many areas. I hope those guys can figure out a way to save the company.

Spent most of the rest of the weekend working.

More Cars [Apr. 22nd, 2008|06:36 pm]
Yesterday we drove the new Accord and the CRV. They both fit us well, and drive fine. Actually, I think the CRV is the best overall fit for my parents so far. The back seat of the Pilot was so tiny we didn't even try to drive it.

Definitely not for me though, the cabins are gaudy and unrefined when compared to my VW.

Rise [Apr. 20th, 2008|07:50 pm]
I'm completely exhausted right now. The gf's sister was in Madison visiting from Boston this weekend.

Saturday we went to a Latin baby shower. Holy crap. That was a lot of screaming, awwwwing and clapping. Apparently in Latin culture it's expected that guys go to these things. I need to work on my Spanish. Afterwards we had Laotian, and then met up with a bunch of people who had just taken their MA exams. It was a good (and late) night!

Today I got up at 2. We rode our bikes all the way around the lake I live next to, then I made BBQ for everyone :-) I might not be able to stay awake past 10:00.

More Cars [Apr. 10th, 2008|06:25 pm]
Yesterday we tried out the Toyota RAV4 and Highlander. The RAV4 felt cheap and cramped. The Highlander has a lot more room, but costs a LOT more and is pretty thirsty. I think we should look elsewhere. I was always under the impression that SUVs were as big on the inside as they look on the outside, but when you put 4 people in them who are over 6 ft that conception breaks down quickly.

While I was at the dealer I sat in all of the models, as I always do. I can tell you right now that there is no chance in Hell I could ever drive a Prius! Those things are TINY!

I'm getting more excited about the new Clean Diesels coming from VW. The new Jetta wagon has fuel efficiency that rivals the Prius, and doesn't have the cost or pollution overhead of a battery and a second engine.

My dreams of a BMW 3 series or Audi A4 are rapidly dissolving.

Twice Removed [Apr. 3rd, 2008|09:59 pm]
Tonight I finally made it to the Himalayan/Nepalese place in my neighborhood. It's been here for about a year and I still hadn't been there somehow. Amazing food, clean contemporary atmosphere, and the Thievery Corporation over the speakers - I'm sold. We were there for nearly 3 hours. This location is perfect. I'm glad I decided to buy here.

I'm exhausted. Long day.

PS - I'm always shocked when I look at my products' usage statistics. Why are SO MANY users still using IE5 on 800x600 resolution monitors?

My parents have asked for my help in buying a new car. The requirements:
  • Enough room to haul large items around (such as a new TV)
  • Better than 25 MPG highway
  • Heated seats
The cars I can find that fit this are:
  • Subaru Forester
  • Toyota RAV4
  • Honda CRV
  • VW Tiguan
I love car shopping, though I don't understand why they want an SUV as their primary car.
